Vacuum Systems

Vacuuming is not a very exciting chore. Getting out the equipment, walking up and down the stairs, running hoses and cords across the room. It’s a time consuming process and for most people it needs to be done at least once a week, if not more for those who have pets and children. So, a central vacuum system is a fantastic way to cut out much of the hard work in vacuuming and make your home far easier to clean.

How Central Vacuuming Works

Central vacuuming starts with a unit placed in your garage or basement. You then run a series of tubes throughout your home’s walls with inlets in carefully selected locations. Those inlets can be placed as essentially anywhere you’d like, allowing you to hook up your vacuum wherever you might need it. No more dragging cords around the house trying to reach every nook and cranny.

There are even inlets for dustpans, allowing you to sweep dirt and debris from a kitchen or bathroom floor directly into your central vacuum system, cutting out a lot of bending over.

Central Vacuum Installation

If a central vacuum sounds like something you could use, the process starts by finding a place to put the central unit. Usually, it is placed away from the rest of your home, where it can be easily serviced and emptied without subjecting your family to its exhaust. Tubing is then run to wherever you want inlets placed. A professional can walk you through the measurement and planning process.

Inlets should be placed carefully throughout your home to ensure you have access from every room that needs vacuuming. Even rooms without carpets may need vacuuming eventually, so plan ahead during installation. Usually, one inlet in every room of the house is sufficient, but you may want to add two or even three in rooms that are especially large.

There are two different types of systems to choose from – a cyclonic system and a filtered system. Filters are traditionally made with cloth or paper and work fairly well for almost all types of cleaning. However, if you plan on vacuuming up larger bits of debris or want to use it in a shop or basement, a cyclonic unit is more powerful and capable of separating out large items that might clog a filter unit.

You should also carefully measure the size of your system. Usually a 20 amp system provides plenty of power for a house of up to 4,000 square feet. If your home is larger than this or if you’re installing your vacuum system in a shop or commercial setting, have the space measured for efficiency before selecting a system.

Maintaining Your Central Vacuum System

Unlike regular vacuum cleaners, a central system needs to be serviced at least once every year or two. Because you will have additional vents and pipes in your home with air passing through them regularly, they should be checked often to remove debris. You should also have your central unit properly cleaned and checked to avoid clogs or breakdowns.
